Im getting back into bfg with some mates.

I dug up my old fleets, my ork fleet for my waaagh and a beat up chaos fleet I bought off a friend a while ago.

I just need to know a few things.
1. Whats the average points size for a game.
2. Any tips for playing the orks, from what I remember last time(some time ago) spam brute rams and try not let the enemy flank you.

Cheers

May the Enemies blood on your choppa never dry or your welding torch grow cold!

I have *zero* experience playing Battlefleet Gothic, but I remember reading an article back when I was looking to get into it that basically said the best strategy for Orks is to spam capital ships and launch wave after wave of torpedoes. Try to split the enemy fleet in two, and then go in for boarding actions.

It was in Warp Rift 29, which you can find here:

Too bad the miniatures are so damn expensive these days. Would have loved an Ork fleet.

One of my all-time favorites, BFG. But there are some things which are mildly broken.

Brutes are good, but it is very difficult to make ramming a successful strategy. You have to be damn good at fleet maneuver. Not getting flanked is rule no. 1 in BFG regardless of fleet.

Most ork weaponry is shite at long range so you get pounded on the way in and if anything survives you rip them a new one at close quarters. Of course, the more maneuverable fleets are never going to let you close and the more shooty fleets are not going to leave anything alive to close. Hence, the best bet... ordinance. Torpedo waves and fightabombaz. Fightabombaz are the best small craft of all the races. 2nd ed rules though. It was quite a different story according to the original rules.

And if you ever do close, Orks rule boarding. I have built fleets based on boarding that have eaten Beakie fleets for lunch. Again fleet maneuver is essential.  Oh, yeah, a super deadly ramming combo is brute rams and a hulk. The built-in turn from the gravity well makes ramming brutally easy.

Back when I was getting regular games of BFG (haven't played in about 5 years) we would generally hit the table with 2000 pts. and we would schedule massive bring-everything-you've-got blowouts occasionally. I think I have upwards of 3500 pts built and painted (with no hulk :D ). 1000 pts is a good game. In my experience, Orks get manhandled in low-points games due to a distinct lack of command and control.

Enjoy.

Ok so this is the list I cam up with for 1500 points
Warlordsx3
3 x two extra rerolls
2 x mega armoured boarding parties
1 x extra power fields

Gorbags revenge ork battleship

4 x ork terror ships

1 x brute ram
With the terrors and gorbags revenge.
The brute ram was because I had the points spare.
What do you guys think?
Going to spam ordinance

That should do.

Don't forget the boarding torpedoes. I always found them to be very entertaining.

Note that six rerolls is about the useful limit IIRC.

Found my 1500 pt list that I generally ran with... https://buonanno.org...c/List1500.html ... it's a bit more diverse than just ordinance spamming.

Gorbag and the Terrors flood the universe with ordinance while the Kroozers draw fire and try to line up for a ram/boarding run. The brute squadrons play on the flanks or head for the nearest gravity well to line up for a very distracting ramming run. And if you end up close to the enemy, ramming/boarding with Gorbag's is always an option.

How did your game go?

I guess this thread rekindled my interest in this game, because now I find myself buying a small Ork fleet... sigh.

Well the first game took us 4 hours to complete between trying to remember the rules and chatting to people. I lost badly in that I was tabled but as I said I was treating it as a learning experience. Mind you we fot a few rules wrong that would have worked in my favour, such as crippled ships halfing their turret value and boarding torpedoes we fot wrong as well. This would have made a massive difference in the game as I was ordnance heavy.

I enjoyed it though, I might drop a terror ship to get some escorts though, Im thinking a few brute rams would come in handy, that or the ones with heavy gunz.

Sounds good. What list are you using? I noticed you took a freeboota kaptain, which isn't in the main book.

Digging around a bit, it seems like there are multiple versions (armada, 2010 compendium, BFG:R), and the impression is that some of the shortcomings of the original Ork list (which is what necessitated a full-out ordnance approach in order to be good) have been fixed. That would be cool, and allow for a more more diverse list.

I was using one of the list from the 2010 compendium.

The list I used was the last one I posted here with the terror ships and gorbags revenge.
Im thinking of dropping a terror ship and taking some brute rams escorts as I feel its one aspect the fleet is lacking.
