Da Klanz Now I noze wot you gitz are finkin….”Wotz ole Hakbash on about talking about da klanz, when es just a Goff.” Well dis ere Goff has been around since Ghazie was just a sprout so I noze mo fings den a brainboy when it comes to wots Orky….so be quite and I’ll tell ya zoggin gitz about da klanz before I hafter git out me choppa, now where did I put it…NOSHER????. The purpose of this article is to give new players a source of information on fluff, modeling, and army lists when it comes to Ork clans. This article will detail all of the Ork clans from how to model them from current GW bitz to what units on the tabletop best describe the clan. So enough of the boring introductions and on to the meat of the article…see I knew what you where thinking. ;) Bad Moonz The symbol of the Bad Moons clan is a grimacing, yellow moon-face wrapped in black flames. Bad Moons are the richest of all the Ork clans. Orks use their teeth for currency. As the Bad Moons teeth grow faster than everybody else’s they are very wealthy. This fact is not regarded as an unfair advantage, as any Ork who is tough enough can always bash a Bad Moon on the head and steal his teeth. The Bad Moons are what passes for a merchant class in Ork kulture. They continually buy, sell, swap, and con to get even more teeth. Bad Moons like to display their wealth with expensive and highly decorated Wargear. They usually have the best Wargear and wear the most gaudy clothes, which usually have yellow and black patterns derived from the clan symbol. They also love to spend their teeth on food, which means that many Bad Moons are a bit stout around the belt. The Bad Moon clan will be full of Wargear to show their wealth and power. A good way to show this on your minis is to use the equipment pouches, shoulders pads, and other gubbinz on the Ork sprues to add extra bitz to your minis when making a Bad Moon clan army. The Bad Moons will make use of lootas, mega-nobz, flash gitz, and ard boyz. The majority of your army will consist of shoota boyz rather than choppas just to show who has the most teef. When to comes to the ard stuff like heavy support you will be leaning towards battlewagons, gun batteries, and possibly a deff dread or kanz. Not many teef laden Bad Moonz are into fast attack choices but it is not unheard of for a warband to include bikers, truks, or even deff koptaz. With the above considered it is easy to see you will rely on firepower over brutality in a Bad Moonz army. When you start building your army you will find the hooded head from the WHFB Orc boyz sprue to be your best friend. The moon shaped hat is the way to go for the proper look for your boyz. The helmets both from the 40k and WHFB sprues will also go a long way to show you have the teef to spend on expensive war gear, so using a majority of helmeted heads and the moon hooded head will give you the Bad Moon look to your boyz. Trim off the horns from any helmets that have them to complete the look. You may want to beef up your nobz with eavy armor and plenty of gubbinz, again sticking to the helmeted heads as much as possible trim off any horns or spikes. Scopes and gun sights on your shootas also make for a good shooty look. The warboss should be in eavy or mega-armor and would fit well if cyborked to the max. The WHFB night goblins have a few moon gubbinz which might serve you. The night gobbos also make great gretchin mobs for a Bad Moon army. You could also make small moonz out of plastic card to add as glyphs to your vehicles. Army comp could look like this. HQ Mega-armor warboss, fully kitted out. Weird boy or big mek with KFF. Elite Mega-nobz. Lootas. Tankbustas. Fast attack Deff koptaz or buggies. Troops Ard boyz, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Gretchin mob. X 2 Shoota boyz mobs, 3 x BS, nob with PK, Bosspole, and eavy armor. Truk boyz in fully kitted out truk, nob with eavy armor, pole, and PK. [These boys could be slugga boyz instead of shoota boyz.] Heavy support 3 x battle wagons fully kitted out. The ard boys, mega-nobz, and tankbustas can be put into the battlewagons. Blood Axe The Blood Axes are not trusted by the other clans who consider them to be treacherous gitz who will march off to war along side other Orks only to run off when things get tough. Blood Axes will even trade and deal with humans, which is considered a sure sign of their lack of proper Orky spirit. In fact, most of this reputation is quite unjustified and evolved because it was the Blood Axes who first encountered the armies of the Imperium and who have had the most contact with Imperial culture. Thus, the Blood Axes have picked up a number of Imperial battle practices that are not used by the other clans, most notably wearing camouflaged Wargear and using captured or traded Imperial vehicles driven by Blood Axe crews. Their warlords tend to have a better understanding of grand strategy and will even retreat if they are losing rather than fighting to the bitter end like other clans. As such, the Blood Axes have earned the reputation of being cowardly gitz with the other clans, who fail to notice that the Blood Axes normally come back later, reinforced with more boyz and better prepared than before. The Blood Axe clan will be full of Umie looking gear. A good way to show this on your minis is to use the equipment pouches, shoulders pads, and other gubbinz on the Ork sprues or imperial sprues to add extra bitz to your minis when making a Blood Axe clan army. The Blood Axes will make use of lootas, kommandos, tankbustas, and ard boyz. The majority of your army will consist of shoota boyz rather than choppas just to emulate a Umie army. When it comes to the ard stuff like heavy support you will be leaning towards looted wagons, gun batteries, and possibly a deff dread or kanz. Not many sneeky Blood Axes are into fast attack choices but it is not unheard of for a warband to include bikers, truks, or even deff koptaz. With the above considered it is easy to see you will rely on cunning over brutality in a Blood Axe army. When you start building your army you will lean towards helmeted heads, or make berets out of green stuff for the plain heads. Trim off the horns from any helmets that have them to complete the look. The majority of your boys and nobz will be helmeted or have a soft hat of some kind. Truks and buggies could be made out of looted land speeders, rhinos, or a chimera. Camo patterns on your boyz and vehicles can be in any color. Army comp could look like this. HQ Warboss. Weird boy or big mek with KFF. Elite Kommandos. Lootas. Tankbustas. Fast attack Deff koptaz or buggies. Stormboyz. Troops Ard boyz, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Gretchin mob. X 2 Shoota boyz mobs, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Truk boyz, nob with pole and PK. [These boys could be slugga boyz instead of shoota boyz.] Heavy support 2 x Looted wagon. Russ or a bassie. Big guns battery. Kannons or lobbas. Death Skulls The Death Skulls are renowned as plunderers of the battlefield. After a battle, the Death Skulls descend upon the wreckage to salvage weapons, equipment, clothes, and anything else they can find. They are also tremendously good at scrounging [Some would say stealing] equipment from their fellow Orks. Thus, the Death Skulls have earned a bad reputation as a bunch of looters, spivs, and petty camp pilferers, and Orks from other clans normally keep a wary eye on any Death Skulls that are hanging around. The clan is named after their horned skull totem, and skulls and bones are prominent among their personal adornments. The Death Skulls are notoriously superstitious and often paint their skin blue to bring them luck. They believe that this war paint earns them the attention of the Ork war gods and brings them better fortune and more stuff to plunder. The oddments the Death skulls pick up on the battlefield or elsewhere are used to augment the warrior’s already bizarre war gear. Death Skulls never seem to throw anything away and end up festooned with weapons, bone amulets, strange items of clothing, and cherished bits of long dead enemies. Death Skull Meks are highly skilled at welding and bolting together bits and pieces of weapons to produce the highly feared, if rather unreliable, kustom kombi-weapons and deff guns with which so many Death Skull boyz are armed. The Death Skull clan will be full of random looted gear. A good way to show this on your minis is to use the equipment pouches, shoulders pads, and other gubbinz on the Ork sprues or imperial sprues to add extra bitz to your minis when making a Death Skull clan army. The Death Skulls will make use of lootas, tankbustas, and ard boyz. The army may be a mix of shoota boyz and slugga boyz. When it comes to the ard stuff like heavy support you will be leaning towards looted wagons, battlewagons, and possibly a deff dread or kanz. Not many nickin Death Skulls are into fast attack choices but it is not unheard of for a warband to include bikers, truks, or even deff koptaz. With the above considered it is easy to see you will rely on nickin stuff over brutality in a Death Skull army. When you start building your army you can use any Ork or Orc boy heads. Being that all of your gear is looted it doesn’t matter which heads you go with. Again the hooded head from the WHFB Orc boy sprue makes a good old school Death Skull hat if you chop off the top of the hat and add a skull to it. The torsos from the WHFB Orc boy sprues come with stitched together vests which can be painted in different colors to give you a patch work look. Beakie shoulder pads can also be used to add the looted look to your army. Vehicles could be made out of any races vehicle as long as you add blue paint to it in the end. Boyz and nobz should get blue tattoos or face paint just to be proppa. Army comp could look like this. HQ Warboss. Big mek with KFF or SAG. Elite X 2 Lootas. Tankbustas or burnas. Fast attack 5 x Deff koptaz. 3 x Warbuggies. Troops Ard boyz, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Gretchin mob. X 2 Shoota or slugga boyz mobs, 3 x BS or 3 x rokkits, nob with PK and pole. Truk boyz, nob with pole and PK. [These boys could be slugga boyz instead of shoota boyz.] Heavy support 2 x Looted wagon. Russ or a bassie. Big guns battery, battlewagon, deff dread, or 3 x killa kanz. Evil Sunz The Evil Sunz are irresistibly attracted towards fast warbikes and loud noise. This trait is common among Orks, but especially pronounced in the Evil Sunz clan. They are constantly tinkering with the engines of their bikes and buggies and try to get as much speed out of them as possible. Unsurprisingly, the Evil Sunz have many meks, because Mekboyz are indispensable when it comes to keeping vehicles in running order. The totem of the clan is a blood red face grinning out of a sunburst. Evil Sunz wear red clothes and often paint their machines red too-firmly believing in the old proverb the “red onez go fasta” and “if itz red no ones gonna catch up wif ya.” The Evil Sunz are especially noted for their “biker boyz” who ride large and very noisy Ork warbikes. They dress in leathers marked with the Evil Sunz insignia, bedecked with chains, belt harnesses, and their foreheads are often decorated with metal studs screwed directly into their thick skulls. The Evil Sunz clan will be full of vehicle crew gear. A good way to show this on your minis is to use the equipment pouches, shoulders pads, and other gubbinz on the Ork sprues or imperial sprues to add extra bitz to your minis when making a Evil Sunz clan army. The Evil sunz will make use of warbikers, and truks. The army may be a mix of shoota boyz and slugga boyz. When it comes to the ard stuff like heavy support you will be leaning towards looted wagons or battlewagons. The Evil Sunz are notorious speed freeks and will make use of all manner of fast attack choices. With the above considered it is easy to see you will rely on speed over brutality in an Evil Sunz army. When you start building your army you can use any Ork or Orc boy heads. Though the biker heads, Stormboy heads, and the loota head with the bandanna mask make excellent speed freeks. Trim the horns off of the helmeted heads. Everything needs to be painted red. Red face paint or tattoos on the boys. The boys can get away with having only a few bitz painted red but the vehicles should be ded fast. Army comp could look like this. HQ Warboss. Big mek with KFF or SAG. Elite Nob bikers. Tankbustas, lootas, or burnas. [With Big mek in a battle wagon] Fast attack Deff koptaz. Warbuggies. Warbikes. Troops Ard boyz, 2 X BS, nob with PK and pole. [Battlewagon] 4 x truk boyz mobz, all have nobz with PK and pole. Heavy support Looted wagon. 2 x Battlewagons. Goffs The Goffs can be identified by their predominantly black Wargear and the clan totem, a black bull’s head. They have the reputation of being the biggest, ugliest, smelliest, meanest, and most ferocious of the Orks – which is saying something! Of all the Ork clans, the Goffs are the most inspired by the thrill of battle and are specialists in hand-to-hand combat. They consider themselves superior to the cowardly Orks of other clans, who hang back and shoot when they could get into the thick of battle. Most Goffs carry brutal short ranged weapons, such as choppas and sluggas, so they can get stuck in as soon as possible. Black is the preferred color of the Goffs. Other clans that wear brighter colors are marked as “not proppa” Orks or just plain “weedy.” The only decoration normally allowed is a check pattern of black and white or a contrasting border. Excessive deviation from the way of the clan is met with derision, and the miscreant will certainly get clobbered by any boss Ork that comes his way. The Goff clan will be full of horned helmets and choppas with little in the way of extra gear. Except maybe for an occasional ring through the nose. The Goffs will make use of nobz, choppa boyz, and ard boyz. The army will have a majority of choppa boyz with few shootas. When it comes to the ard stuff like heavy support you will be leaning towards a deff dread, killa kanz, or a big gunz battery. Not many Goffs are into fast attack choices but it is not unheard of for a warband to include Stormboyz, bikers, truks, or even deff koptaz. With the above considered it is easy to see you will rely on brutality over cunning in a Goff army. When you start building your army you should use a majority of horned helmeted heads on both your nobs and regular boyz. Spikes and studs on the helmets also add to the look. Scars can be added to your boys and nobs using small strips of green stuff or simply use a file and make thin scar lines on the skin. The horned bull skull banner pole from the WHFB command sprue makes an excellent waaagh banna or a decoration for any vehicle. The plastic banner top from the black Orc box makes an excellent mega-armored warboss head. Everything needs to be painted in black, accent with red bitz and checked patterns in black and white. The black may be weathered with a light dry brush of gray. Army comp could look like this. HQ Warboss. Big mek with KFF. Elite Nobz mob. Tankbustas or burnas. Fast attack Stormboyz. Warbuggies or deff koptaz. Troops Ard boyz, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Gretchin mob. X 2 Slugga boyz mobs, 3 x BS or 3 x rokkits, nob with PK and pole. Trukboyz mob, armed with choppas, nob with PK and pole. Heavy support 3-6 killa kanz. Deff dread, battlewagon, or big gunz battery. Snakebites Snakebites use technology reluctantly and always feel more comfortable with simple machinery and well established Orky ways and values. They preserve some values that other Orks have long since abandoned and shun certain aspects of recently developed technology. Probrobly the best example of their traditional ways is their preference for riding into battle mounted on the back of a ferocious warboar! The snakebites can be distinguished from other Orks by their tattooed skin, clothes, furs, and rather backward appearance. Their name comes from the strange initiation rites of the clan, which involve a new Snakebite being bitten by poisonous snakes to prove his toughness [the venom is sucked out immediately afterward.] The snakebites are a nomadic clan that rarely settles in one place for long. They always seem to be “lookin fer sumfink and wanderin orf.” They always carry a selection of poisonous snakes with them when they migrate to a new planet, just in case the local serpents prove unsuitably inoffensive. The Snakebite clan will be full of primitive Wargear to show their feral nature. A good way to show this on your minis is to use plenty of WHFB bitz and hair squigs. A good way to give your Snakebites army a feral look. The Snakebites will make use of cyboars [warbikes], gretchin, and ard boyz. The army will have a mix of shootas and choppa armed boyz. When it comes to the ard stuff like heavy support you will be leaning towards battlewagons, gun batteries, and possibly a deff dread or kanz. You will be using boar riders as warbikes in your fast attack slots. With the above considered it is easy to see you will rely on brutality over cunning in a Snakebites army. When you start building your army you will find the WHFB Orc boyz box to be your greatest asset. Make use of the feral heads with the hair squig top knots, bare heads, and the choppaz from the fantasy Orcs on a majority of your army. Stay away from the helmeted heads. Your warbikes will actually be WHFB boar boyz. You can convert them into 40k boyz by adding some wires and werky bitz to the boars and using WHFB or 40k Ork boyz parts on the riders. Fur pelts from the Beakie space Wolves or green stuffed onto the boyz and nobs will help give them a feral look. Face paint and tattoos can be added just to prove you have the best venom in town. Stick with earthy colors on your entire army to give it a primitive flavour. Army comp could look like this. HQ Warboss on super cyboar. [Bike] Weird boy. Elite Nobz on cyboars. [Nob bikers] Fast attack Cyboars. [Warbikers] Troops Ard boyz, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Gretchin mob. 2 x slugga or shoota boy mobz, 3 x BS, nob with PK and pole. Heavy support Big gunz battery. Battlewagon. Squiggoth. [Battlewagon] Freebooterz The Freebooters exist on the fringe of Ork kulture. They are bandits and sell-swords belonging to no tribe or clan. Quite frequently they are remnants of tribes and warbands that have been nearly wiped out, together with fugitives fleeing from the wrath of their warlord. Among the Freebooters are a handful of unstable individuals who are particularly dangerous and aggressive even by Orkish standards. These Orks form small roving bands of pirates and freebooters. Naturally they are eager for adventure, combat, and booty, and are quite happy to tag along with Ork tribes as mercenaries. These motley crews have long since abandoned any tribal or clan loyalties, and have adopted highly personalized insignia in place of their former clan symbols. Some of these Orks prefer to remain anonymous, some want to forget, some want to start a new life, but most have simply forgotten who they were. The pirate band is now their home. As a result, they roam the universe in small, dilapidated spacecraft, and hide out on isolated planets and large asteroids. The band is usually led by a hardened warboss or Kaptin. In any case, the leader risks being ousted from power by a rival if he fails to find enough booty for his boys. Ork freebooterz can be readily identified by the sign of the jolly Ork, which in various forms is the common badge of all freebooting bands. The jolly Ork is a banner depicting an Ork skull and two crossed bones on a red or black field. The Freebooterz may take any and all of the combinations of clan units above so no real how to can be determined. I have looked into obtaining Ork pirate heads on line and a few look promising though you could model eye patches, peg legs, hook hands, bandannas, and pirate hats with just green stuff if you like. The idea behind the Freebooterz is a pirate theme with all of the armies vehicles sporting the jolly Ork glyph. The glyph can be made out of plastic card. WAAAGH! da klanz

Hakky - great article! :thumbs The stuff about Deffskullz definitely rings true; I always try to customise by Boyz with stolen Beakie shoulder pads, and the occasional Boltgun or Heavy Bolter. One constructive piece of criticism, though, the headings and sub headings could do with being a little bit more prominent. Perhaps make them bold, italics, capitals, larger font, or all of the above? Is this going to go on the main website?

Some tips/tricks for those who want to be part of the best clan, the Goffs. - prime black and you dont have to do anything more then highlight your fabric (make ure you toch up all your missed spots with black). I use Bastion Grey from the P3 line + black 50/50 for the first hight light and then 75/25 for the 2nd, and pure Bastion Grey for the last, tiny highlight. My boyz just get these drybrushed on, my Nobz and other elite guys get then painted layer by layer. - When trying to paint the 120+ boyz in your army break it into groups that you can comfortably get done in 1 or 2 sittings (5-10 is a good place to start, I personally do them in groups of 20) start to finish. The vast majority of people will get worn out after base coating skin on huge numbers of guys. The smaller blocks getting done help keep you motivated. Also give your self rewards for painting X number of boyz. Things like "if I finish 10 boyz I get to paint a Nob. The break from painting boyz is a good change of pace and help hold off burn out. - Also with painting boyz, they are boyz so they dont need to spend hours on each guy. A fully painted unit of 29 ok painted boyz + 1 awesome painted Nob will look 1000% better then 5 really nicely painted boyz and 25 primed boyz. Spend your time on your Nobz, HQs, and more elite units. Put all your dags and checks on them, use 3 or 4 layer highlights, etc. These guys will pull the army together and give it that Goff feel with out wanting to kill your self trying to put checks on boy # 68 of 120.

This is a great article, but i was wondering if da Bosses would consider putten some pics of orks to help inspire people 4 clan colors, and to inspire builds when doing conversions, for example i love the way the Dawn of war 2 kommando nob looks and some front and back views would be nice, and his warpaint really does a good job of "clan allegence"

Very nice article, lots of usefull stuff there! One thing I found odd though: Where are the flash gits in the Bad Moon list? would think they would be the perfect choise for that klan.

Hey everybody... I just thought I'd point out that there's a skirmish game of 40k called Killzone evolving right now. It's fan based but is gaining enough popularity and credibility to be represented at Adepticon (first fan-based Warhammer game to ever have that honor). Have a look at the rules here: http://www.heresy-on...skirmish-rules/

The developers have been considering writing special rules for Beakies variants, but not for us Orks and our klans! There is a thread at the Killaone forum that suggests that klan-specific rules be developed, and they acknowledge that if there's enough popularity and support for the idea, they will consider it. So if you really love the Ork klans, and you want to see them represented in this fan-based 40k skirmish game, then please go and make your voice heard!

Sign up here: http://specopskillzone.freeforums.org/

And post about your support for the Ork klans here: http://specopskillzo...klanz-t263.html

I don't know if this is in violation of the-waaagh's rules in any way, but I do plan on trying to do some rabble-rousing so that this happens. I think it would be a service to all Ork-kind, and maybe even serve to send GW a message that the Ork klans do indeed have popular support!
