Your right Scarpia, we're not going to turn off that section of the forum and like NS said, we don't want to police it and have a specific set of rules. Thats not really the intention behind it. But, now this is bringing up old stuff, but for instance, the type with your butt thread. Now is that really necessary?

not likely. But if a member has a bad day and wants to rant a bit, I think it's kind of nice there is a place they can do it.

Take the golden throne thread. I'm glad that WBB was able to have a place to post it, where it could be disucssed fairly with a bit of humor. (I know that this fits in the new parameters, but I'm just using it as an example).

As far as dragging up old posts, is there any way to autolock a thread after a certain date and only allow the post creator to revive it? That might help if it worked.

hmm, im not sure what to think, i strongly agree with all of ns point and with those of others. i personally would like the fbh to stay like it is, just a bit tamed down. for example threads about halloween jokes and costumes and christmas are something i feel all forums should have, i wouldnt like to come to this forum on boxing day and see know sign of christmas whatso ever. but it has overgrown that, its progressed to many pointless threads. when theres one or two it can be a fun way to socialise, de-stress and chill out after reading a few threads of modeling tips and stratergy. the only problem of this in my veiw is that how do you keep it like that with so many members, it would be very difficult to let people be silly but only a bit.

as someone else said, your in a very un-enviable possition at the moment mr. mods. but i trust in your dicisions and if the fbh was restrickted to gw only, this place would still be my favourite. thumbs.gif

p.s. i know im bieng childish here but i'd just like to proudly mention my 46% postage in mek shop. biggrin2.gif

I think the Golden throne topic is a perfect example of a hobby related topic that didn't fit well into any other section. Perfect for the FBH. thumbs.gif

Scarpia- I did mention in the first post that I enjoy seeing you guys have fun here, and I hate to be the one to put an end to it... I hope never to! I enjoy the camaraderie, and it has been great to meet many of you in person (except for the smelly ones). But, I am hesitant to let the FBH turn into the slush pile for anything and everything. Even with the moritorium on religion and politics, it continues to be the most laborious of the sections for the HQ. It's where nearly all the conflicts occur. I get a lot of PMs concerning FBH topics, and this takes up the largest percentage of my time spent maintaining the forum. Couldn't this time be spent in a better manner?

When we built this forum, we had to decide whether to have the FBH section or not. On one side, it would be a lot easier to maintain if we just stuck to the main topic: Orks! However, I think we'd be missing the personal element, which is also an enjoyable aspect. Right now, I think it has swung too far into the chaotic side of the spectrum, so I'd like to reel it back a bit to more of a reasonable scale.

No arguments there, and sadly again I have no construtive ideas. I didn't realize posters PM you about topics!

Even if you only allowed members above runtheard to post there, that probably wouldn't help that much.

Well I for one will support the bosses and will try to be good and watch what I post in the FBH, but feel free to give me the whip.gif if I'm not. thumbs.gif

This is a brilliant idea. One common problem is people voting on old polls. They get sent to the top, when it's beyond usefulness, and we can't smack the person who did it as polls are anonymous.

Perhaps if thread starters had power to close their own thread when it passes usefulness?

A responsible poster could PM a HQ member and ask them to do it for them. Of course a self editing option for the poll creator would be nice to have too. yes.gif

Regarding the exhumation of old poll threads, is it possible to build in an automatic lock/death date to poll threads?

there's no autolock that I am aware of. the problem with the'autodeath' is that older useful posts will die, too. That makes searching less useful and we will have more repeat questions. I don't think we can distiguish polls and non-poll topics as far as shelf life goes.

I think once a poll is locked it no longer can be voted in, though.

I get the impression that some people misinterpret our intention. We don't want to close down the FBH or forbid everything non-hobby-related. But we do want our members to restrain themselves more, and in precisely the same manner as they used to. Call it the love of old times, but we had considerably less non-ork, non-hobby and - excuse my harsh wording - senseless posts in the FBH when we started.
The line is hard to draw, and it's also about quantity. If I see one piece of panzee dung comic a month, that's fine, but when the FBH is filled up with these, something's wrong. I'm exagerating here, but you get the idea. The measure for me is: How many interesting topic titles come up in the FBH? To be honest, I don't even expect anything usefull in there anymore. And "off-topic" does certainly not mean "useless". As a result I rarely ever visit the FBH, and if I do it's only for moderating reasons.

can you not assign autodeath to just the FBH? I admit to being very ignorant of the technical details with boards, so maybe this isn't an option. But do we really need to keep threads alive forever in the FBH?

Hi,

Isn't the basic point here a request to the membership that we all simply exercise a little discretion, and restrain the urge to post useless crap and one liners? Given that what seems to define this place is a general lack of animosity, flame wars, and spam, and the abundance of polite behaviour and constructive advice (thanks to y'all, by the way, again), can't we just exert a little more self-discipline in the FBH, where it seems the mods think we are slipping?

That seems a bit close to the old, "why can't we all get along" speech, but you get what I mean.
