After seeing Bruznik's work, both on line and in person (as Nosher has about 8,000 pieces of his stuff - and it's awesome, by the way) AND after seeing Hakbash's goodies, I've been inspired to try my hand at some scenery.

Now dat mad mek Gooba, after all of his whacky designs, deserves a propa shop. So I'm thinking of making a mek shop for him. I want a tower like Bruznik's, but an open workshop (roofed, but with the sides open). I want it fenced in on most sides, and I am planning a fuel lager in the compound as well. Naturally the entire area will be litered with bitz.

I've attached a pic below of what I'm thinking. I would apprecate thoughts and ideas right now, I've never done foam core board construction, so any hints here would also be appreciated.

Finally, if anyone would like to take a peek in their bitz boxes, and send me junk to litter it with, I would be most appreciative. I'm planning on having a "conversion' in process in this as well, so if you have an idea of what model I can be working on, or better yet donate it CoolOrkDark.gif that would be great!

I think that would be a great idea for a mek garage.

After making terrain with foam core for Mordheim I have one thing that will help with the construction: pins. The kind you would use in sewing. It adds to the stability when gluing the faom core together.

What kind of bitz you looking for? I don't know if I have a lot of Ork bitz, but I'm sure to have a bunch of vehicle bitz. Maybe.

***edit***

By vehicle bitz, I mean beakie/chaos beakie vehicle bitz.

Pins. That makes sense.

as far as bitz, I was sort of half joking....but hey, what kind of loota would I be to turn down free stuff! I guess I'm looking for junk - got an old buggie that is totally worthless? A trukk that got hit with a cigarette lighter, and can't be used for anything else? that kind of stuff.

*sigh* My mek is bugging me about wanting a garage, too! cryork.gif

I would try taking a razor/x-acto and beveling the edges where two pieces of fomecore meet. I would think it's make nicer corners. Maybe have some reinforcing bits in the interior.

Textured acrylic medium would make it look more like rough concrete or stucco.

Beveling makes sense - especially as the spary primer "eats" the foam core. Has any one used the non-foam eating black primer? I've only heard about it, I dont' even know what brand it is.

I was also thinking of making the floors removable - so the bottom story would be foam core x 3 thick, second floor foamcore x 2 thick, and the top tower wall foamcore x 1 thick.

Afte watching guru's DoW movie, it definately will need a lot of oilers, and some roof mounted big shootaz (or maybe a skorcha, like in the Road Warrior....

oh... some people cover the joins with masking tape, too. If you texture the surfaces, it will be less obvious that it is tape.

I'm glad to have inspired you to make your own Mekshop Scarpia! smilingOrk.gif

When I'm constructing buildings from Foamboard I use gumstrip to cover the joins, which I then cover with pollyfilla and textured paint. The gumstrip is the kind that you wet before it becomes sticky and it tightens a little as it dries providing a crisp corner that also helps strengthen the building's construction.
One thing I do with the strip before I use it is to tear off the straight edges, which gives a rough join with the card beneath and once covered in textured paint is virtually invisible.

Good luck with your project, let us see some pictures when its finished! smilingOrk.gif

I use foam core, pink foam, or ceiling tiles to make most buildings. I screw them together with drywall screws, glue together with PVA glue or liquid nails. I use spackle or modelling clay as a filler to cover any holes or gaps in construction, then hit with home made textured paint. [Sand / paint / PVA / water mix]
Artist gesso works pretty good too as a filler or for texture but is a bit expensive. Great for stucco Ork wall affects. [NS thumbs.gif ]
Bruznik, what did you use to make Noshers bunker? It looks and feels like hard board.
Let me say your work is the best I've seen...the attention to detail and the quality of the work is over the top. thumbs.gif

Good ideas for a mek shop so far Scarpia. I'm gonna make one too eventually. I think I'll use a crane in the project as well as a garage type area.

na, i got a better idea, (sorry if this has been said) dont do a building next to it, just have an open shack with a tin roof over the top slanting, help up by some poles, then have big drums on one outside and some tables in the inside liening around (i could maybe show you pics but stupid paint wasnt responding!) questionork.gif

but then again, thats just my likings, not yours

Bruznik, and everyone else, thanks for the tips. Like Hakbash says, Bruznik's stuff is A1 orky gold. His scenery has soo many details its amazing - the bunker that Hakbash is talking about has a patched roof on top where a shell fell through it - and when you remove the top, the inside of the roof is open to the patch, and the bunker FLOOR shows damage where the shell actually landed! Amazing!

@Sean, that was my actual origional idea. But I have grown to like the idea of a tower with big shootaz and skorchaz on the roof, grot manned.

@Hakbash, a crane aye? Good idea! Consider it looted!

Hows this for a mekshop idea, picture if you will, a small section of Mektown. Orks and gretchin wander to and fro, a mek banging away at something in his shop on the corner of WAAAGH!! and Gargant st. His shakk a modest, two story dwelling. Out back has the wartrukk he's been working on...UP ON BLOCKS no less..he steps out onto the second story balcony..one corner of it held up by two grots, one on the other shoulders...

Ok so I think I'm in business. I got sheet of 1/4 inch foam core for the building, and I'm going to base the whole thing on 1/4 plywood, with a beveleed edge, about 12 inches square. I want it big enough to fit all the (as Strong Bad would say) crap that I want to ram in, but small enough where it could conceivalbly be used in a regular battle.

Grubdakka, don'tcha worry none, there will be a vehicle in the shop. not sure what yet, but something will be being worked on. I'm also planning on doing a wiley E. Coyote blueprint thingy too!

I work as a shop hand, and I can say we wouldn't get by without an overhead hoist. Its runs east-west along an I-Beam in the roof, and the I-Beam moves along the roof supporting I-beams north-south. A remote hangs down by the chain. One uses a loop of chain to move side to side, the other has motors controlled by the remote for that.

Just an idea if you want to put the effort into making it. A crane as Hakbash suggested might be easier as well as be more visible though.

We also have a pile of scrap metal, that we keep around, just in case, and I'm sure Orks would be the same.

As for bits, I have a buggy that suffered a horrible death in the making of my RC buggy. I ended up ripping just about all the bits off. I can go through what I have, so I can maybe send you some scraps I have no use for.

Iron shark, the hoist is a perfect idea, and shouldn't be too hard to do. I may do one in conjunction with a crane - thanks for the idea. and heck ya, I'll take the buggy! (I'll save hakbash some effort - no gud lootaz) Please let me pay for postage though.

So I started construction today. First off is the inside first level of the tower. I plan on making this out of 1/8 inch foam core, with "stacked" sides. This is 2.5 inches high, and 3 5/8 inches long.

user posted image

The next layer will be 5 inches high, and 3 6/8 inches long. by stacking the layers externally I hope to not only have a strong structure, but a nice solid base for floors. Additonaly, this should make the windows and doors recessed.

I also picked up a Tamiya quad tractor to convert into a mek mobile. I really like the looks of the model, and intend on adding a dragging mechanizm to the back.
