Oi!
So I wuz thinking I'd celebrate my latest beakie trouncing by painting up a new box of shootas. I also wanted to try a painting technique I saw over on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5mcpGhUJzM) which was done using mostly washes. I basically followed the tutorial all the way, though instead of using a mix of chaos black/black ink I just used black ink and instead of one coat of thraka green I used two. Once I gave the model its final coat of devlan mud I went back over the model and highlighted the blue bits, finished up the teeth and re-did the eyes. I'm putting these up in the rack even though I still have a bit of work to do on them (Drilling the guns, checks/dags, bases) because the main job is finished and the details are done on a 'I'm bored, let's paint some details on the boyz' basis. I'd love to hear any comments on this new style and the overall appearance!

That technique seems to work really well. Those look like some pretty fine table-top ready miniatures. I think it works best on the skins and clothes giving them a lot of depth. Did you find that process to be much easier/quicker than traditional painting?

The actual painting is a bit faster, mainly because you're not basecoating/drybrushing/inking/highlighting, you're just inking/painting/inking/highlighting. It takes longer for each stage to dry but when you're doing boyz you tend to do them in an assembly line style. I do really like the depth it adds to the clothing and the deeeeep shading it provides to the skin. The thing that took the longest, honestly, was the upper highlighting and the details on the teef/eyes.

Really like how well these turned out. Thanks for sharing your boyz & the youtube video, I'll be using these as a template when I paint up a couple mobs of boyz soon.

I did something very similar with m Orkz, also bloo, where I painted their flesh bleached bone, and did a layer of flesh wash (2 layers of devlan mud when they switched) and two layers of green ink (three of the green wash) for normal ork skin. You can see the finished product in the links in my siggy.
