After seeing some of the great scratchbuilt ships a while back, I decided I would try my hand at it as well.
I tried not to cobble this ship out of bits, but built it generally out of plasticard. Pics are terrible, but it's on my desk right now, primed and waiting, so it shouldn't be too long to see some better pitchers. I myself don't see orks creating insane hodgepodge designs with something like a ship, but rather imitating the designs of imperial and fish'ead ships. As a result, I tried to make a detailed escort for my first ork model. Comments, criticism, suggestions on paint? This ship took virtually no specific bits, so it should be possible to build no matter where you are. |

Very nice
I think the only thing that I can see that needs more work might be the engines, perhaps some thin strips wrapped around the tubing to make it look less smooth. Maybe bulk up the rear underside a bit too as it looks a bit front heavy and a bit more delicate near the back. Look forward to seeing more Edit: Paintingwise I guess you could go for a orky version of the imperial paintschemes, replacing shiny gold bits with corroded brass and other corroded metal bits. -------------------- |

That's some very nice tiny p-card work there, Bitz. I can appreciate this work because I tried it and ended up with lots of tiny fragments of p-card glued to my fingers. I like it and expect it will look good painted up. Could we get a Barry pic?

Oh that one looks really nice! Great job! Personally I don't think the Orks would always copy Imperial (or who ever else...realise that Tau are just a minor race compared to the rest) for their designs, but yeah...that's just me I guess. But yeah...you really managed to make some cool Orky stuff here.
Any ideas for the colours yet? By the way...I might be stealing some of your ideas for my own scratchbuilt fleet! -------------------- |

A barry you say?
![]() ![]() @ Nexus: Hmmm, I think you're right, I'll try to make the engines more greebley with my next couple of escorts. @ Docsnik: I started using the tip of my knife to stab the little squares, and then maneuver 'em onto a blob of glue. @Malika: I think they'd try to imitate, but I've got modelling ADD so I wanted a reason to be able to build a wide variety of ships. I mentioned tau simply because one of the main guns is supposed to be a hijacked tau pulse-cannon-gun thingy. And go ahead and loot to your hearts content--I was thinking of doing the metal up like yours! Thanks for the C&C and ideas! Keep 'em coming! Anyway, updates should come soon, along with some new ships. (hopefully) |

Thanks for the Barry shot. Looks good. Just a tad bigger than the metal escorts. The primer pulls it together nicely. Dis'un getz a
I know what you're saying about using the knife to place the p-card. The alternative to stabbing is licking the knife and using the tiny amount of spit on it (I actually used a sculpting tool) to pick up the p-card. Through an odd circumstance of timing I even ended up with a bit of p-card glued to my tongue. -------------------- Orks -- comic relief in the grim darkness of the far future.

Well, I can't say that I haven't been inspired by the builds of those before me. And anyway, these are really easy to build once you have a basic design. Which, unfortunately, is rather hard.
Anyway, I started painting it, and I think it's looking alright. However, I'm really trying to make it darker, and dirtier. ![]() I need to highlight or shade the klan plates, but if you guys can think of anything else that could make it look better, please, feel free to tell me what sucks and what doesn't. ![]() Or if you could help me find out what I'm doing some badly with the pictures, that would be good too! |

Escort size huh? Hmm...right now I've got a bunch of escorts, but I'm not 100% happy with them, perhaps I will use your concept to base my escorts on. What kind of knife do you guys use to cut plastic card, or even metal? Because right now I'm using pliers to cut it all which is ok...but not that accurate (+ that is caused a lot of..."collateral" damage to the material).

Looking good sofar
I think some battle damage would be good too, perhaps on future ones you could have dents/holes and then streaks of soot sweeping back over the ship. I think some streaks/scrapes would add to this one too, make it look like it's flown through a debris field. -------------------- |

Nexus is right. Black wash or five. Scorched Brown + Chaos Black is even better. Looks dirtier. Streaks and scrapes are asking a lot though, Nexus. This thing may look big, but I reckon it's a task to hold it while painting wiffout paintin' ya fingaz.
And finally put a couple tiny windows on it by painting little white dots. -------------------- Orks -- comic relief in the grim darkness of the far future.

Heh that's a good point MGD, I just looked back up at the barry pic
I think a ragged looking streak of tin bitz along one of the larger coloured panels on the prow and then a bit of a go over with boltgun metal would convey the look of a collision with a space-chunk -------------------- |

as I don't know how rusty a spaceship can really get hehehe, really good point... there's not a lot of free oxygen floating around in space now, is there? -------------------- Orks -- comic relief in the grim darkness of the far future.

Wowza they're small!
Great work on those, the only thing I can suggest would be to re-mount them on a thinner support. Some kind of wire would look a bit better, although if you're painting the rods black then I guess they wouldn't be as noticable.... -------------------- |

It took no more than five minutes for the whole base, including the cutting and such for a few more.
It's really not that hard, once you figure out how to do it. Essentially you just figure out a basic body size, a "window/cockpit" size, and just cut out a grid of each and glue on top of each other. Then you add little with offcuts, engines from thin tubine, and base it. |

Oi, could you do something along the lines of a tutorial for these things? So post pictures of each stage of those things. I really love those fighters!
Any idea on how to build Assault Boats? -------------------- |

I would get some pins or small nails and glue your fighters to the heads. The thinner stands will give it a better look. You are inspiring me to finally build my super mork battleship.
