How it all began

A couple of months ago I was attending TADEFIG 40K Tournament (TADEFIG is a Brussels club which translates litterally to LOTSAFIGS). While waiting for it to begin, I was chatting away with a guy who all of a sudden brought up the subject of Epic gaming. I expressed my interest, but thought to myself "no way am I going to dish out the cash for yet another game system".

In between games we continued talking about Epic and nothing else. He informed me that the rules were free for downloading on the Specialist Games site of GWS and that there are rules for Speed Freeks and even Gargant Bigmobs!

I was still reluctant to commit myself into saying I'd start an army, even after he announced he'd organized an Epic tournament in mars (making publicity and trying to get people to start a new game for his tournament, the cheeky git!)

At the end of the tournament I won best converted and my prize was a starter deck of the Horus Heresy card game, which included one goody-good-doers deck and one spiky deck. None of my friends play this game and I've never seen it played in any of the clubs I visit, so I quickly decided I'd check on the Waaagh if I couldn't trade it against something more interesting.

I decided to download and print the rules to have something to read (I spend about 2 hours per working day in a train so I need stuff to keep me busy). After having read the rules, I decided I quite liked them. The alternate game-rounds make for a whole different tactical approach compared to WH 40K & Fantasy.

And whaddaya know? A mere 6 hours later I get a PM offering me enough Orks to go for at least a 1K (if not 2K) Epic army and the saga of Waaa GoldFang was ready to be continued 'through the minifying glass'.

First contacts...


Having finished glueing and painting my first 1K worth of mini-Orks, I decided it was time to get in a test-game.
I contacted the club that is holding an Epic tournament in mars and asked when I could pass by.

When I arrived at the club, a week and a half later, I already had painted up another 1000 points worth of WarBands.

When I arrived, the guy I was playing proposed to play 2.5K, giving me some of his Orks (a Supa Stompa and a couple of DreadNaughts). My list had 2 Ork WarBands, one of them mounted in BattleWagons, 2 Blitz Brigades with a Big Mek upgrade, one with a GunFortress, one StompaMob with Supa Stompa and DreadNaughts, one Big Guns Mob and one Gargant.
Still, my army is nothing compared to his full 17K warhost, "The Purple Guardians"

I was facing Panzees, and thought to myself, great, lots of feeble CC guys, all I have to do is close the gap, and krump 'em good. Lucky me I mounted one unit in BattleWagons. And boy oh boy, was I wrong!
I was facing an almost skimmer-only army with two smallish warbands on foot. One unit was able to pound me with indirect fire, and I never even got close enough to that unit to even shoot at it. His other units moved forwards, shot and then retreated again. Keeping themselves mainly out of my range.
I was pretty pleased when I pulled a refused flank on him, denying half his army LoS to mine during three turns, but that only delayed the execution.
Another point of glee was two skimmers moving in, offloading a bunch of Panzees that charged my Gargant, who stood his ground, and eventually beat them off.

In the end I was able to kill of a couple of his skimmer-units, but with only one depleted WarBand of Boyz left and a couple of Big Gunz, it was clear that he had beaten me.

Oh well, not too shabby for a first fight in a new system, especially since I did make him sweat a couple of times.
For me, it was like I was fighting a bunch of ghosts, which is completely in line with the Panzee fluff.
And, most importantly, we had lots of laughs!

A couple of weeks later, I faced another opponent in the same club, and guess what? Panzees again.
Only this guy clearly had another approach : two Titans, lots of skimmers (again, two with the indirect fire), and some shooty infantry.

The beginning went rather well, with one unit of BattleWagon mounted Orks speeding along a road (adds a couple of centimeters per move) and unloading real close from turn one, while the other got shot to pieces by my opponents' first salvo.
I was getting close to be able to get those Titans, hiding behind a wood, in a crossfire.

But then, the trap sprung on me when it became clear that the Titans have jump-packs?!?! Next thing I know, they are behind my troops wreacking havoc onto my Stompa Mob.

Now due to them having a ward save, I wasn't even able to scratch their hides, with my Gargant desperately firing at them each and every turn.
The upside? It took those two Titans 4 turns of concentrated fire to eliminate my StompaMob.

Also, using the roads to my advantage, the Blitz Brigades close the gap with the indirect firing skimmers, but as he also ad a couple of vehicles there that can dish out 9 auto-hit-anti-vehicle-shots I decided to give those priority and I managed to erase them, only to be shot to pieces shortly afterwards by the shooty infantry.

In the end, I got beaten again, but this time, I had dealt better with the whole advance-shoot-retreat routine, and he had a lot less left on the fields of battle than my first opponent.

Lessons learnt?
With all those Stompas, Gunwagons, Gargants etc. I am spending way too much points in stuff that can easily be eliminated/routed by one or two enemy units in one turn. I need to drop some of the fancy stuff and get more Boyz!

Cost/rewards wise, the unit that did best in both games were my BlitzBrigades, so they are staying. The BattleWagons and Stompas definately eat away points, and the Gargant really is a big points-sink, especially in 2K or 2.5K games.

So back to the painting table it is, first priority : paint up Ork WarBands, and at least one Kult of Speed (I'll need something to support my Blitz Brigade(s)).
I do think I'll need at least one other 'fast' unit (the above two games really did make it clear that this game relies a lot on speed) and I'm torn between putting one Ork WarBand in BattleWagons or giving one unit a Landa (more expensive, but cannot be blown to smithereens on turn one as it isn't on the battlefield yet)

And I do hope I'll get at least one game in before the tournament in mars.

My painted units


When you are reading through my battle reports, but you haven't played Epic in your life, you might want to refer to this list here, where I give a short description of the units I painted and what they do on the fields of battle.

WarBoss : A lone fig which joins either a base of Nobs or, when you field one, the biggest Gargant available. I much prefer him amongst his Nobz, where he gives a nasty little extra edge in CC (Macro Weapon!) and can get another nearby Warband to join the fray when he charges.

Ork WarBand : these should be the backbone of any Ork army : 6 Ork Boy bases (mediocre short range shooting, and rather good in CC), 2 Nobz bases (better in shooting, approximately just as good in CC as Ork Boyz) and 2 Gretchin bases (cannon-fodder; when they die, your mob doesn't suffer any negative consequences)

Kommandos :
these can be bought to bulk out your Ork Warbands. Their advantage is an increased charge range, increased distance they can wander from your formation and an increased control zone.

Speed Freeks : Your fastest moving mob (not counting flyers) which can be a mix of various choices. I only have Bikes and Buggies painted. Bikes are nasty both in shooting as in CC, but their shooting is very short ranged. Buggies have a better range, but perform below par in CC when compared to the Bikes

BattleWagons : needed when you want your troops somewhere fast (move at double the speed as an infantry base) but rather vulnerable. A rather expensive gamble. If they pop, the units on board only survive on a 6.

Blitz Brigade : Orky shooty goodness on wheelz with a decent save. Include a Big Mek upgrade (a.k.a. gakking huge gun) and your opponent should be very careful indeed.

GunFortress : lots of Orky shooty goodness on wheelz with a more than decent save and a couple of structure points to boot! Especially effective when hidden from enemy shooting by other vehicles (like a Blitz Brigade)

StompaMob : need I say more? Lots of guns stomping across the battlefield with more than a decent save. They can also provide quite the smackdown in CC when equipped proppa-style (i.e. the way I equipped mine).

Supa Stompa : more guns than Stompas and a couple of added structure points. Add one to a Stompa Mob and all of a sudden, even the biggest noob (like me) understands what target-priority is all about.

DreadNaughts : quite the vulnerable lot, but good for soaking up casualties and blast markers in stead of your Stompas, should some survive and reach CC, they can be quite nasty too.

Big Gunz Mob : like Blitz Brigades, only without the wheelz. These are even slower than your regular infantry bases and need a couple of turns to get in range.

Gargant : a fething lot of gunz with a fething lot of structure points, protected by force fields and a more than decent armour save. Pretty expensive too, but can hold his own in a melee, and has a sweet impact when firing his gunz.

My first tournament : round 1


Unfortunately, real life was quite demanding, so with only two test-games under my belt (and on top of that against the same race) I took the train towards my first tournament.
There were to be three battles : two with a 1.5K list and one with a 2K list.

My 1.5K list counted the following :
4 Ork Warbands
1 StompaMob with extra Stompa
1 Ork Landa
1 Speed Freeks unit

My 2K list counted the following :
5 Ork Warbands
1 StompaMob
1 Ork Landa
1 Speed Freeks unit
1 Blitz Brigade with Big Mek upgrade, extra GunWagon and a GunFortress

Once arrived, I started unpacking, and immediately got the remark from my fellow-participants that they thought flying crafts were not allowed.
And a quick check with the organisers proved them right. Hence I swapped the Landa for a BlitzBrigade with Big Mek upgrade. Equal in pointscost, a fast unit to replace a fast unit and they have more firepower.

We quickly received the briefing for the first 1.5K game.
Both players' primary objective was entering an abandoned outpost in search of some plans that divulged the location of a stash of adamantium. The player that occupied the outpost first had as a secondary objective to protect a power-plant. His adversaries' secondary objective becoming the destruction of the same powerplant.
The destruction of the powerplant 'd put the outpost in darkness, so that the player in there would need an extra turn to find the documents.
My opponent was an 'umies player whose army consisted of a unit of 10 Leman Russes shockedork2.gif , 3 Basilisks and a Chimera-mounted unit of Autocannon-toting guards.

I get the initiative the first turn and immediately speed up my Speed Freeks into base-to-base contact with the outpost, so that I could enter it and start searching in turn 2. On top of that, the building nicely hid my troops from any enemy shooting. They'd at least need to do a march (which means no shooting) before even getting a LoS to them.

So I decide to give the initiative to my opponent, not wanting to give him too much insight in my plans.
He decides to activate his Basilisks first, pounding one of my Ork Warbands, killing a Nobs base and 2 Boys bases.

And he re-puts the initiative in my camp. So I decide to double two of my Ork units forwards in the direction of the secondary objective I knew I would be having to defend as from turn two. Having all LoS blocked by some hills.

He then decides (like me) that caution is the best idea, and moves his Chimeras' up, so they have LoS to only one of my Ork Warbands, but he is unable to inflict any casualties.

My turn again, I move the StompaMob up with the advancing Boys, and then I foolishly decide those 10 Russes are too big a threat and could use at least one Blast Marker. So I speed up my BlitzBrigade over a road (grants extra movement distance) and pound 'em... without inflicting even a scratch on their hides.

His last activation then sees the same Russes choose a sustained fire action, and my BlitzBrigade is annihilated.

With him having no more units to activate, I move up my remaining two Ork WarBands, one towards thye Chimeras, the other in the direction of the secondary objective.

In the end of the turn, the unit shot at by the Chimeras is able to loose it's one Blast Marker, and the unit that got pounded by the Basilisks looses all but one Blast Marker. His Russes quite simply shrug off their Blast Marker as well.

Turn two, I win the initiative roll again, and decide to place my Stompas in front of the powerplant, just behind a hill, and move one Ork Warband into the powerplant. This made for a nice start of a 2-line defense which should be quite hard to crumble.

He then activates his Russes first moving them on top of the hill and unleashing their shells onto the Stompas... only two of the four survive, and are of course broken. And he gives me the initiative again.

To reinforce my quickly depleted defences, I move up two Ork Warbands up next to the powerplant.
His turn, he again pounds the already depleted unit with his Basilisks.

Next up, I move my Speed Freeks in the building to start searching.

He moves up his Chimeras again, this time killing 2 bases of Grots of the unit facing them.

And I move that unit further towards him.

In the end-phase, I fail to rally the Stompa, but the other 2 impacted units manage to loose most of their Blast Markers.

In turn 3, where I was ready to charge the Russes, my only hope at defending my secondary objective and secure the primary objective, I miserably fail to win the initiative roll... As a consequence, 10 Russes pound the powerplant with Sustained Fire. Needless to say it got completely destroyed, annihilating my chances at winning the primary objective (the game lasting for three turns, and me needing an extra turn now).
Feeling the need for revenge (and scoring points in killing as much units as possible) I charge in my WarBoss's unit into the Russes, taking advantage of his special skills, pulling two ther Ork Warband units with him.
Unfortunately, my dice rolls were bad enough not to win the close combat, and my three units retreated, while still having offed 5 Russes.
I also charge in on the Chimera unit, but their supporting fire got the best of me, also routing that Warband.

Conclusion of the game : I didn't get the primary objective, I didn't get the secondary neither, he got his secondary objective and killed loads more points...
I lose.

My first tournament : round 2


The first battle finished, we got briefed for the second.
Again we should play our 1.5K list, and the losers from the first scenario were pitted out against the winners.
Not too honest you might think, but it did make for a nice narrative : the losers were supposed to try and stop the winners, who in their turn were supposed to flee off the battlefield, thus securing the plans recovered in scenario #1.

On a long table (well over 180 centimeters) I had a 10 cm deployment zone for 1K of my troops, he then had 35 centimeters for his whole army.
At the other long end, I could then deploy the leftover 500 points in a 45 centimeter deployment zone.

I am introduced to my opponent, and it turns out he's a Beakie player (home-made chapter, so that's pretty cool) with Jump-packed troops, troops in Land Raiders and troops in Rhinos + 2 Warhound Titans. Bugger, as I have a painly footslogging Ork army with two fast units.
I decide to place the StompaMob and my WarBoss's Warband at the far end, convinced I'd not be able to overtake him in any case, so I needed my hardest close combat hitters there, as he needed to bypass them. I spread these troops out inasmuch as possible, so he'd need to put iin a couple of kills before being able to pass by my zones of control.

I lose the initiative roll, and in stead of immediately running for it, one Warhound opens up on my BlitzBrigade, immediately braking it.
Great, I am now left with only one fast unit, so I do the only thing I deemed interesting, and that is charge that second Warhound with my Speed Freeks. Without even getting a wound off the WarHound, they flee from battle a while later (supporting fire can really, really hurt you).

I decide to keep the initiative (I needed to catch him) so I do a double move with one of my WarBands, closing in on one of his troops.

He then promptly activates both his Jump-Pack Beakies with a march (which immediately made me realise one of the two was holding "da planz") but all I can do is try to put as much distance behind me as possible. One failed march later, both his mounted warbands are halfway across the boards already, and I move as quickly as possible behind him.
In the end phase, I fail to rally both the Speed Freeks and the BlitzBrigade.

I win the initiative roll for turn 2, and promptly take my revenge by charging one of the Warhounds.

I roll lots of dice, manage to inflict one wound (the rest were saved). He replies, does one wound, and while I remove a Grots' base, I realise I didn't let them fight. So I roll 2 dice... 2 sixes. He scoops up 2 dice to save and fails both. He then scoops them up again, announces "luckily those Warhounds have reinforced armour" and promptly fails his saves again.

Seeing the fate of his brother, the other Warhound marches over to join his motorised troops.

Most of the rest of that turn, I moved forwards my pursuers, while he positions himself out of range of most of my interceptors, and out of range of the pursuers.

Turn three I get initiative again, and with my Stompas I manage to inflict some casualties onto one Assault Warband.

He then shoots up my Warboss's unit, thus greating a gap big enough for him to be able to squeeze through. One march move later, and the Warband holding "da planz" is off the table.

My first tournament : round 3


For the third battle, we had to use our 2K lists, and we got teamed up.
People from the rear end of the classification got a partner that was on top, and I got assigned a Traitor Guard as an ally.


My ScumGrod had one unit of 10 Russes, a BaneBlade, some Basilisks and a large infantry squad mounted in Chimeras.

I took the center of the board and the left hand site; my scumgrod placed his Russes in between my lines, ready to storm a hill to get an advantageous line of sight position, and then filled out the right side of the board.

And we were pitted out against 2 Beakie lists.

The adamantium appeared to be inside two buildings, and both needed to be occupied for two whole turns in order to get the mission objective.
The Beakies win the initiative roll... They speed up a first Rhino-mounted squad, and disembark into the first building, then they retain initiative and do the exact same for the second building.
SNAFU for us as they say in the military(in any case, our troops were positioned to do the exact same thing should we have won the initiative).
The rest of the battle sees my Orks getting pounded by both Beakie armies (my Orks being more easy to destroy) while the Traitor Guard suffered next to no casualties.
In the first turn we try to dislodge the buildings' occupants with concentrated fire, but the save granted by the buildings made this very difficult.

For some strange reason, my Orks drew first blood over the Guardsmen, even though I let him do the firing first. Blitz Brigades with MekBoy upgrades rock!

At one time they even killed 3 Land Raiders in one go. A sad moment was when one sigle shot gets through my GunFortress' defences, which then gets a critical hit, destroying it immediately.

Turn two was ouchy time, as I only managed to succeed in one single activation roll, and quite a couple of my units got Broken.

In the third and last turn, desperate to at least take away one building from the enemy hands, I charge in with two units, destroying all but one of the opposing bases.

Further shooting from the Guard fails to kill them.
But, all the other shooting was fine, a single volley of the Russes downing a full-shielded Warhound in one go. My Stompaz managed to take two wounds off the other, but they got severely retaliated by return fire.

One great moment of exhiliration ensues when my last GunWagon (the remnant of 2 Blitz Birigades rallies from being broken, crosses the battlefield during 2 turns, ignored by everyone, and as the very last move of the game gets behind the hill shielding 3 WhirlWinds. I shoot and -1 Whirlwind!

In pointscost, the Beakies win with the nearest possible of margins (20 points in a 4K battle), but them having gotten both objective buildings grants them a solid victory over us.

Unconfident in the results of the final ranking, I install myself at the bar and order a nice, cool beer.
After having applauded the three winners (Chaos, beakies and panzee, in that order) they announce that there is a Best Painted, and to my surprise I hear my name. I walk up to the goodie-table, and place my grubby mits on a nice GunFortress (different from the one I already had).
Then the other winners are announced, and it seems that I still scored 10th out of 12 guys. Oh well. I still walk up to the goodie-table, and one of the few leftovers is a box with 120 Orks + 12ish BattleWagons. Mine!
A minor disappointment at home when I realise it is 120 Orks without any heavy weapons, nor Grots nor Nobs. But hey! I'm sure I'll find a way of solving that problem!

In any case, I had a blast. Got respect from my last co-players in the big game, where after a minor rules-disagreement (in which I was right) I apologise for the nitpicking by stressing the fact that that was only my 5th game, and that I was still learning.

It's good to know that you have enjoyed your EPIC gaming. In my oppinion, the best game system that GW has developed. Specially if you play tournament game scenarios.

I am the strongest supporter of this system in Mexico and I am a little concerned about appocalypse. I think it'll steal players from my system winkingOrk.gif

Your army selection is quite different from what I use. But it took me a couple of games to understand EPIC ork strengths.

The tourney/campaign sounded really cool. I wish we had something like that here.

So, I really hope this is the start of a lot more EPIC gaming for you.

My army selection is mostly dictated by the figs I got through swapsies.

I'm just getting into epic as a game, and I just wish I had seen this when it was first written, congrats on the good looting haul thumbs.gif

I've not played a game like this before, i've normally stuck to bigger things, is it that confusing in the beginning compared to 40k?

Don't worry, 't is only up for a week or so.
As a Nob, I've got acces to an area where I can write out a whole article piecemeal in topic-format, and then haul it into another forum. Hence the old dates.

It isn't too confusing, as it is actually a bit simpler rules-wize.
Tactically, you're bound to hit a couple of blanks, because of the I go-you go system, where opponents can react immediately to your moves.
Oh, but do try and paint up your army, and find opponents with painted armies, because at this scale mix-ups are a lot more common when playing 'grey' armies. Also, you'll be amazed how quickly you can paint 1K in this system.

If possible I'd really recommend playing a couple of games without flyers (although that does give Orks a huge disadvantage against indirect firing) before going the whole way.

And remember, don't take everything I said above for the whole truth, as it is a description of how I am discovering the game. So I am bound to make wrong choices here and there; I am by no means a seasoned player.

The game mechanics are quite simple. and, as in any system, you get to discover specific rules the more you play.
But the IGYG makes it very tactical. And the objective based games (called tournament games) are the best ones adding even more tactics to the game.

Whenever you need advice (army wise or tactic wise) just drop a line. I am up for whatever it takes to bring more people to the system.

Continuing the saga of Waaa GoldFang in Epicland I took out this Epic Gargant I had lying around and started to paint him.

1h30 later, I was ready to add 650 points to my Epic force :

This is what he looks like next to the Gargant I already had (for whom I immediately made a base now that I had the exact measurments)

By the way, this image made me realise I still have to paint those base-edges!

In any case, this should provide a nasty extra challenge at the club that has just reopened (and where I used to get my fix of Epic gaming.

And while I was at it, I decided to make a custome box for my Epic army, in stead of just cramming the whole 4K into one little box.
So I took a cookie-box, and made small cardboard compartments per unit

They are not glued to the cookie box, so I can resize when necessary, and all fits so well there's no risk of sliding in any way.

Well, I had thought about that, and I've been searching for ages for the Killa Konvicts' skull sticker I received as a lil' extra in a trade with Scarpia years ago.

He might be a no gud lootin' git, but he knows his propaganda winkingOrk.gif (and how to make a normal trade a lil' more special)

Apart from that, I'm sure I'll paint some white arrows, caution marks and 'golden teef' on there somewhere

Your comparmentalized cookie box is a great idea! It certainly plays out better than my jumbled heap in a shoebox.

I love Epic and used to play the original when it was known as "beakie". Sadly I never got around to playing the new system but the models certainly look wonderful. I think that I shall have to check out the "new" Rules etc.

Through the minifying glass: Da cycle continues

Sooooo...

A little over a year after my first tournament in the Epic gamesystem, and with only one practice-game in between under my belt, I attack another tournament; this time with two 4K games and finishing with a 1K game.
My lists :

A very early start for me as I have to drive to the other side of Belgium, and the tournie starts at 9 o' clock sunday morning.
Once arrived, the pre-battle insults are flying around everywhere (in a good, skumgrod kind of way) and I get assigned my first opponent : an 'umies player.
Great, from a previous experience I will be doing damage control mainly, aspecially since he's packing quite the amount of indirect fire, 2 Lemann Russ units and a big, mean Titan.
He wins initiative and immediately almost demoralisez a first Ork Warband (he's one blast marker short) with his first salvo shockedork2.gif
A little later on, he needs 6's on five dice to harm me, guess what happened ...

Unflinching, I decide that attacking/advancing forwards in a very menacing way is the only solution (if I try a shoot-fest, I'm gonna lose for sure
So one Blitzbrigade rides up to claim an objective

My Stompaz wiggle their way forwards

I send my Fighta Bommas in for at least damaging a well concealed unit that is defending an objective

And I send another Blitzbrigade over a river, ignoring the difficult terrain-test dangers and eating up the reduced distance

All this merry while, a destructive rain of highly explosive shellings rains down on my troops, with very little casualties on the other side.

Turn two... Waaaaaaghhh

And my Stompaz wonder what a Russ 'd taste like


Now due to my opponents' very, very slow way of playing, I quickly realise I need some quick action in order not to lose this one, as we won't have time fer a 3rd round... And then he makes his mistake... with 3 Shadowswords, he does a sustained fire order... and eliminates one BlitzBrigade... ouch... but multiple stucture points Warmachines block LoS so I run another BlitzBrigade forwards, straight into his deployment zone, out of LoS of his whole army except the Shadowswords laughingOrk.gif
I try and pull out another objective by charging his Titan with my Orks inna Landa, but the bet doesn't pay off (rolled a 1 on my combat result vs his 6; go figure crazyork.gif ) and I do not capture the objective in his deployment zone.
He manages to capture the two objectives in my table half; no-one killed the other's most expensive unit so we both get one objective point : draw even though the only thing standing @ my side was my gargant with 2 wounds, the unit of BlitzBrigades and my Fighta Bombas (which survived miraculously : he had Flak in each and every single unit!!!)
Phew... close call!

Second battle is against dem Beakie Boyz. Deze guys have one Warhound Titan and one biggie Titan
It starts off all very funny like with him winning the initiative, rolling a 1 for his first activation, and then again a 1 on his Warlord re-roll, and I promptly do the exact same thing laughingOrk.gif
First turn is pretty equal going with both placing blast markers on each-others' units and inflicting a couple of casualties.
Then comes the disaster that is second turn... I throw some miserable saves (5 wounds on my 6 Stompas, roll for armour and reinforced armour... 1 survivor cryork.gif for example)
My army is quite depleted, but still I have been able to keep a couple of units neigh unscathed and positioned in order to go and claim the objectives on his side of the table in turn 3...
So in the thrird turn, after having used up all my activation points (one by one, not holding the initiative in order not to give him too much free moves after I finished placing everything) I move the last two units in position to claim the objectives...

Only to be decimated by Bolter Fire after that

And here I took my most favourite pic of the whole tournie :

A very fun, pleasant opponent (even if he won 3 objectives vs my zilch), full of tactical advice and wisecracks (which flung both ways)
Thrid battle, 1K 'Minigeddon' I am pitched out against another Ork player! Waaaaaaaagh!
His list went like this :
2 Ork Warbands
Speed Freek Kopta unit
Stormboy unit

Everything went nice and equal in the first turn, positioning ourselves for defending or claiming objectives.
Comes the second turn, I speed my Speed Freeks forwards in order to deny his Koptaz a passage through to the objective in my deploy zone (which I abandoned in the hope of getting his two objectives) and to my horror I lack 2 centimeters to 'close the gap to the board-edge'. He immediately flies his Koptaz through there (my overwatch unit scored 0 hits crybaby.gif ) to go & sit on the objective.
In revenge, I blow two of his units standing in the way to smithereens with two sustained fires (one from a BlitzBrigade, the other from my Orks) while he blows my Stompaz off of the table
Turn 3, the remainder of those decimated units rally, I speed my Blitz Brigade up to his objective, but with the rallied troops, he still manages to get just enough Blast templates in to break the Blitz cryork.gif
Again, I lose

Lessons learnt fer da next tournie (which is in june)

1. On paper, having plenty and then some of activation points looks like a very good idea. On the battlefield however, when those formations disappear like Grots inna Face Eater pit because they really are too small and vulnerable...
My first follow-up list is ready... I lose 3 activation points, but all units bar three (Stompas, Landa and Gargant) gain considerably in survivability.
And I 'only' need to paint up 19 Epic bases worth of Epic troops to obtain the new list winkingOrk.gif
Added advantage of the new list : it forces me to concentrate my fire in stead of offering me the choice. And experience did teach me that I need to concentrate my fire!
2. I can field garissons (duh), even Stompas are considered as garisson material (if only i'd known that in the first battle eyerollork2.gif ).
I will not forget that last point winkingOrk.gif
3. Seen that the french Epic community is strong, they made their own PDF translation of the rules.
Seen that I usually play in french (Belgium, ya knoo?) I used those PDFs to copy-paste the troops' stats directly into my armylists which 'll render my game play even quicker vs double checking all the stats in the rulebook.
