Its just display grade expanded polystyrene foam, roughly trimmed withe a hot wire cutter. And yes, i'll be covering it in das.

..at least I THINK I'm going to cover it in das. I'm having visions of a wooly sqiggoth smilingOrk.gif

Just have to figure a way to do it that is reletivley easy and inexpensive AND wont make look like a plush toy.

Wooly squiggoth sounds like an interesting idea, the only two ways I can think of doing it at the moment would be to individually implant each hair until you go insane, or to get some faux fur and dirty it up, trim it randomly so it's not all the same length and then make it look matted and nasty.

Woohoo! We get to see MM do a squiggy from scratch! yes.gif Thanks for that, MM. cheers.gif

Wooly? Hrm, I'm trying not to be negative, but I really don't see a way. Wait... Unless...
get yourself a rabbit pelt. It'd take some serious sewing skills, (can you say Taxidermist?
Sure, I knew you could.) but the results are the only thing furry that I can think of that
wouldn't look out-of-scale. A bit of DAS around the edges to blend into the face and
non-furry areas and give it a proppa haircut and there you have it.

Of course, minus the taxidermist, you'll probably get better results modelling the
appearance of fur with DAS. Just my two cents.

Can't wait to see what you come up with, MM. You've surprised the spores out of me
many times already with your mad modelling ability. Our lot as Orks would improve
if you were working for GW.

Yes, I'm thinking the Matted nasty bear fur. There are some pretty good natural looking fake furs available. And I can Hide seams with armour plates.

Orks rarely have hair, when they do they have special implanted hair-squigs.
I suppose this could be a Hair-squiggoth, but in the end i think it would look orkier without hair.

It definately needs arms winkingOrk.gif Starting on another squiggoth before the first one is finished? Is that a good idea?

Anyway, I like the pose and sense of movement in this second versions a lot more, it looks promising. Don't make it wooly, please. laughingOrk.gif

Cheers

It is one, it just fell into the vat of toxic waste...
It'd give beakies one very bad hair day...
And some hairy situations...
It's the newer squig, the hair apparent...

Aaanyways... I'm sure it'll be aeesome. Loving the pose, nice and low, good for firing off the back of. And jumping off to krump things.

you've really got it going on!

even at the foam stage, you capture the essence of 'squigness'

Nice work thumbs.gif

for fur you could use teddy bear fur with a bit of pva glue it looks great .but remeber to comb the fur when the glue is applied to make it look like strands of hair.

Absolutely brilliant. You may have covered this already, but I am in the mood for making a feral boys army...I just love the concept, anyways what do you use for teeth on the squig? Nice work as always

It's great to have pictures and a runthrough of what they looked like in the very beginning!

Just for those who are searching, Mousemuffins said he makes these with a foamcore base, then DAS Modelling clay and the thick fabric paint for skin texture. The giant teef are epoxy.

well, technically is a Foam Core, but it's NOT foam-core, per-se. It's just normal foam. Foam core is a nifty artists material good for buildings and mostly flat surfaces. All I've used here is expanded polystyrene foam, 2 sheets about 40mm thick stuck together with builders construction adhesive, and subsequently carved to shape.

anyhoo, here he is again, a bit more refined with sandpaper. the toes on his right foot will need to be extended to match the left, and I've turned his head more to his right.

I've decided not to go with fur for now, but I still have to decide weather to give him the same texture as the first or not. Any suggestions?

I'd suggest going with the same texture.

Individuality wil be gained through the howdah and crew, and it helps to have some cohesiveness.

a big thumbs.gif to the work you've done so far, really looking foreward to seeing it all come together!

This guy is looking like he is bending down to chomp on something... if that is the case maybe you could work something where he does not have the classic jaw guard that you placed on the last, and play up a gaping open mouth. That said too, I always liked those birdal bars across the mouth to control the beast, like on a horse. The other thing is, if you are doing a feral army maybe you could do something with less guns, not too sure how you want to do that but I think it would look cool, especially if you are thinking about fur on this guy.

I reckon you should stick some scales on the beast like last time, but give em sharper edges. Like the carnosaur scales, but on a much bigger scale. Now that I've had an opportunity to say something constructive...

Awesome work! The first squiggoth especially is brilliantly done, and I can't wait to see it finished thumbs.gif
